pakari gayo mākhana chorata kānha

Original pad by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

English meaning

(Bound by the strings of a gopī’s love, Bhagwan Kṛishṇa went to her house to steal butter. But as soon as, putting His hand into the butter-pot, He started eating, the gopī arrived. What happened then has been beautifully described in the following pada.) Shrī Kṛishṇa was caught red-handed while stealing butter. He was rapidly eating butter from the butter-pot with both His hands, and, at the same time, keeping His eyes and ears alert, was also looking in all the four directions. Although it was pitch dark where Shyāmasundara was doing so, yet the effulgence emanating from His divine body had lighted the place dimly, like lightening in the clouds. Therefore, the gopī did see Him and asked, “Hey! Who are You? What are You doing in my house?” Shrī Kṛishṇa, startled and frightened at this sudden interruption by the gopī, answered, “I am Kānha. I mistook this for My house.” Again, the gopī asked, “Even if You came here, mistaking it to be Your house, why have You put Your hand into the butter-pot?” Shrī Kṛishṇa replied, “There were ants, you see, in the butter. I was just trying to get them out.” The gopī further asked, “Why did You wake up my sleeping children?” Then, Shrī Kṛishṇa said, “I didn’t, they might have seen some frightening dream.” Jagadguru Shrī Kripālu Jī says, “Oh Shrī Kṛishṇa! To what extent will You patch up the sky? i.e. for how long will You fabricate stories?”
