sakhī! mohiṁ, chandrakirana tad̤apāya

Original pad by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

English meaning

A sakhī, cursing the moon, says to her intimate friend, “Oh friend! The rays of the moon give me great pain. What should I do? I have no control on the moon because I live on the earth and he, in the sky. Oh friend! God incarnates Himself in order to destroy the demons but He acquits the moon thinking him to be His mind-born son. (According to the Vedas, the moon is born of God’s mind, and the sun of His eyes.) Oh friend! I have no control over it and God does not kill him thinking him to be His son. In such a situation, please do me a favour. Go to the chakora bird and ask him to go to Agastyamunī and drink all the rays of this moon, after receiving the knowledge of drinking from him. (Sage Agastya had once drunk the whole ocean.) Then all the troubles will come to an end. (After thinking for a while) But chakora is only a bird, how will he understand the human language? Oh friend! What you should do is, go to the demoness Jarā and ask her to join Rāhū (who is without a trunk) and Ketu (who is without a head) once again so that at the time of the lunar-eclipse, he digests the moon in his stomach forever.” (It was demoness Jarā herself who had once made a great demon Jarāsandha by joining the two pieces of the body of a widow’s son who was cut from the middle of his body.) Jagadguru Shrī Kripālu Jī says, “Oh friend! It has always been the nature of the wicked people to aggrieve even more the people who are already plunged in grief.”
