sakhī! maiṁ, sunī kāli ika bāta

Original pad by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

English meaning

A gopī says to another gopī, “Oh sakhi! Yesterday I heard a group of gopīs talking on the bank of the river Yamunā. One of them was saying, ‘I think it would be the best for us not to live any longer, because Shyāmasundara has deceived us and will never return.’ But a second sakhī said in disagreement, ‘That would be wrong, because when our beloved Shyāmasundara hears of our death, He, too, would give up His life. It is not the aim of our love to inflict sorrow on our Beloved for the sake of terminating our own sorrow.’ Hearing this, yet a third sakhī said, ‘I agree with you, but tell me how can I maintain life (in this pain of separation)?’ Answering her, a fourth sakhī said, “We should be prepared to remain alive till even crores of kalpas waiting for our Beloved, because there is no room for despair in true love. A virahiṇī will plan to leave her body only when she loses the very hope of meeting her Beloved again.” Jagadguru Shrī Kripālu Jī reassures the gopīs, “Oh sakhīs! Do not worry. The summer season in the form of separation is bound to be followed by the rainy season in the form of sweet-union.”
