‘jayarāma yogī!’ ‘jayarāma māya!’
Original pad by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj
English meaning
The leader of all yogis (Yogīrāja), Bhagwan Shaṅkara and Mother Yashodā, after greeting each other with the words, ‘Jai Rāma Jī Kī’ (i.e. glory to Shrī Rāma), start talking. Mother Yashodā : Yogīrāja! Why have you dressed yourself up in this frightening fashion? Yogīrāja : Oh Mother! Your own son is the reason behind this fearful guise of mine. Mother Yashodā : Oh Yogīrāja! Why are you unnecessarily putting blame on my son who is merely two days old? Yogīrāja : Oh Mother! According to the doctrine of the Vedas, this son of yours is not two days old; rather, He is the eternal Supreme Being. Mother Yashodā : Yogīrāja! I myself have given birth to that child. Why then are you trying to teach me? Yogīrāja : Mother! This son of yours cannot become anybody’s son. He is the Unborn, Supreme Being, who has descended Himself on this earth for enacting divine līlās. Mother Yashodā : My hair have turned grey. You cannot make a fool of me like this. Yogīrāja : Mother! This servant of yours (pointing towards himself) has been in existence since the beginning-less time. Actually speaking, this servant of yours is the grand son of your son. (According to scriptures, Bhagwan Shaṅkara was born from the forehead of Brahmā, who in turn was born from Bhagwan Kṛishṇa’s navel. Thus, Bhagwan Shaṅkara is the grand son of Bhagwan Kṛishṇa who has descended as Mother Yashodā’s son.) Mother Yashodā : If you have come to beg for something, do so right away and return to your hermitage. You seem to be suffering from insanity. Yogīrāja : The only thing I am craving for is to see your son. Mother Yashodā : Oh Yogīrāja! Why are you after me? My son will be frightened to see you. Yogīrāja : Oh Mother! You are extremely innocent. The fear of your son makes even Yamarāja, the god of death, frightened. Mother Yashodā : Yogīrāja! You may pronounce a curse upon me if you want, still I will not show my son to you. Bhagwan Shaṅkara, the Yogīrāja said, “O.K. Mother! As you wish,” with a heavy heart and returned feeling piqued. Then, sitting on the bank of the river Yamunā, he started the silent battle of love, raining tears from his eyes incessantly with the aim of being blessed with Shyāmasundara’s sight. And there, Shyāmasundara too, burst into tears making the noise of ‘Kahāṁ, Kahāṁ’ (as if He was asking, ‘Oh Shaṅkara! Where are you? Where are you?’). In the meanwhile, one friend of Yashodā said to her, “I think that yogi has cast some magic spell on your son.” As soon as Mother Yashodā heard this, she rushed to Bhagwan Shaṅkara and beseechingly said to him, “Your Highness! I fall at your feet. My son is really calling you.” In the words of Jagadguru Shrī Kripālu Jī, Bhagwan Shaṅkara said, “Fine, let’s go” and coming to Mother Yashodā’s house, he fed his eyes with the nectar of Shyāmasundara’s beauty. As soon as Bhagwan Shaṅkara came there, Shyāmasundara started laughing. Thus, Bhagwan Shaṅkara had what he wanted and Mother Yashodā’s purpose was also served.
