गोबर उठावैं सिर श्याम सुख धामा।

gāla meṁ gobara ko ṭīkā deyaṁ bāmā

In Braj, Shyamsundar lifts baskets full of cow dung onto

the Gopis’ heads. He says to a Gopi, “What will you

give Me for lifting this basket?” The Gopi replies, “You

like butter a lot. Come to my home and I will give You

butter.” Shyamsundar says, “How will I remember how

many baskets I lifted for you?” The Gopi replied, “For

every basket You lift, I will make a mark on Your cheeks

with cow dung. I will give You as many handfuls of

butter as there are marks on Your cheeks.” In this way,

to count the number of baskets, the Gopi completely

covered the cheeks of the innocent little Shyamsundar

with marks of cow dung.
