<a id="line-3"></a>sudhā bhī hai halāhala bhī hai lakhu bāmā  
<a id="line-4"></a>āṁkheṁ madhubharī madhuśhālā janu śhyāmā

<a id="line-5"></a>Shri Shyama’s eyes have the combined effect of wine,  
<a id="line-6"></a>ambrosia and poison. The redness of the eyes and the  
<a id="line-7"></a>power of those eyes to make one forget the external  
<a id="line-8"></a>world are like the intoxication of madhu, the wine. The  
<a id="line-9"></a>whiteness of the eyes and the power to confer  
<a id="line-10"></a>immortality upon attaining their vision is sudha, the  
<a id="line-11"></a>ambrosia. The black part of the eyes and the pain they  
<a id="line-12"></a>give in separation can be compared to the effect of  
<a id="line-13"></a>halahal, the poison.
